Court Martial
Various members of chambers are briefed regularly to defend in Court Martial cases, both in England and abroad.
In 2009 Chambers delivered a seminar on the Court Martial system, shortly before the Armed Forces Act 2006 (and attendant Armed Forces (Court Martial) Rules 2009) came into effect. This was attended by Peter Fisher, policy adviser in the Office of the Judge-Advocate General, as well as other lawyers. With Peter’s assistance, the seminar sought to ensure that those who practise in this field were fully up to speed with developments in this area of law.
Service personnel who find themselves subject to military law – as well as civilians who are the subject of proceedings in the Service Civilian Court – are often able to obtain Legal Aid, and instruct counsel of their choice. Chambers can provide counsel who have expertise in this area, and who are entirely independent of the Armed Forces, to vigorously defend those who are in such a position. Further details can be obtained from our clerk Neil Jackson, who will be happy to assist and to liaise with the Armed Forces Criminal Legal Aid Authority (AFCLAA) and the Military Court Service were necessary.
